There's a particular moment when this Gemling Legionnaire setup starts to make sense. You fire once, the projectiles collapse onto a target, and the rest of the pack disappears while you're already moving towards the next group. It feels less like managing a rotation and more like setting off a controlled explosion. Getting there still takes some planning, though. A sensible reserve of POE 2 Currency helps with weapon crafts, gem-quality upgrades, and resistance fixes that would otherwise slow down progression. The build earns its "Thanos Shotgun" nickname through projectile overlap rather than one oversized hit. Several fragments can connect with the same enemy at close or medium range, producing a strong Ignite that's converted or scaled through Chaos-focused mechanics. Contagion then carries that pressure into nearby monsters. One click starts the process. You don't need to stand around and watch it finish.
Why the Damage Feels So Different
Most projectile builds care about hitting more enemies. This one also cares about hitting one enemy several times. Positioning matters because projectile spread determines how many fragments overlap on a rare monster or boss. Fire from too far away and the pattern may open up before it reaches the target. Stand at the right distance and the projectiles bunch together, giving you a much heavier initial hit. That hit matters because Ignite is based on the damage that creates it. Once Chaos scaling and damage-over-time multipliers join the equation, the burn keeps working after you've stopped attacking. Against ordinary packs, Contagion turns that single strong effect into a travelling wave. Enemies on the edge of the screen can fall without needing a second shot. Bosses work differently, of course. There's nothing to spread through, so clean overlap, consistent uptime, and knowing when it's safe to step in become far more important.
Gems and Gear That Actually Matter
It's tempting to chase every modifier that mentions Fire, Chaos, projectiles, or damage over time. Don't. Start with the pieces that affect the whole damage chain. Your main attack gem needs levels and quality, while its supports should strengthen projectile output, Ignite magnitude, Chaos damage, or useful area coverage. Gemling Legionnaire gets unusual value from quality, so a modest-looking quality increase can outperform a flashy but poorly matched support. Test changes rather than trusting the tooltip alone; damage-over-time interactions aren't always represented clearly. On gear, the weapon comes first in most cases. Look for strong base damage, useful gem levels, attack speed, and modifiers that support the damage type you're actually scaling. After that, sort out life or Energy Shield, capped resistances, and any attributes required by your gems. A dead character has zero damage, and this build can feel deceptively safe during mapping. That confidence vanishes quickly when a pinnacle attack catches you standing too close.
Building the Passive Tree Without Wasting Points
The passive tree should support the build's real strengths rather than trying to repair every weakness through damage nodes. Take efficient projectile clusters, relevant Chaos and Fire scaling, Ignite magnitude, attack speed, and damage-over-time multiplier where the travel cost makes sense. Area investment is useful, but it shouldn't come at the expense of single-target damage. Your clear is already helped by spreading effects. Players often overbuild for mapping because instant screen clears look impressive, then wonder why bosses take ages. Defensive routing deserves equal attention. Life, Energy Shield, resistances, and recovery can be worth more than another small damage cluster, especially once map modifiers become nasty. Jewels should fill genuine gaps. They're great for combining two useful offensive stats with life or another defensive property, but buying a costly jewel with one excellent line and several dead modifiers isn't efficient. Keep the tree flexible until your gear settles. A few saved respec points can prevent an expensive rebuild later.
How to Play It in Maps and Boss Arenas
Mapping with the build is straightforward, though playing it well still involves rhythm. Aim into the densest part of a pack, fire once, and move. If the Ignite is already large enough to kill everything, repeated attacks only waste time and may leave you stationary during a dangerous ground effect. Use movement to pull loose enemies towards fresh groups, giving Contagion more targets to work through. Narrow corridors usually feel excellent because the projectile pattern stays concentrated. Wide, open layouts may require better aim or a slightly closer approach. On bosses, don't hold the attack button without thinking. Step into the effective overlap range, deliver the hit, then reposition while the burn runs. Reapply when the effect is about to expire or when you know the previous hit was weak. This stop-and-go style is safer than trying to force constant attacks. It also makes encounter mechanics easier to read, which matters far more than squeezing in one extra shot during a dangerous phase.
Final Thoughts
The best part of the One-Button Thanos Shotgun build isn't that it removes all decision-making. It removes busywork. You still judge distance, choose an angle, watch boss patterns, and decide when another attack is needed, but you're not juggling a crowded skill bar every few seconds. Progression feels best when upgrades are made in the right order: secure a capable weapon, improve the main gem and supports, fix defences, then chase premium damage modifiers and jewels. Well-rolled POE2 Items can push the setup into demanding endgame encounters, yet expensive gear won't rescue poor projectile overlap or neglected resistances. Get the basic interaction working first. Once a single shot reliably creates a strong burn and that burn spreads through the pack, the build settles into its natural pace: fire, move, and let the chain reaction do the messy part.
